In one of the largest hacks in history, (an) unknown hacker(s) released information on 500 million Yahoo accounts, including passwords and security questions.  This comes at a critical time when Yahoo is trying to sell itself to Verizon in a multi-billion dollar deal.

No one is sure who the culprit of this large breach is, but Yahoo’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Bob Lord, said that they believe it is a “state-sponsored actor.”

Speculated suspects range from Russia to a “lone wolf.”  Yahoo’s CISO warns that the hacker(s) may posses usernames, security questions, and passwords.

The hack actually occurred in 2014, but only now,  18 months later, it has been made public.  Yahoo strongly urges all users to change passcodes if they haven’t done so since 2014.  It is unclear why it took so long for Yahoo to release this information.  It may just be that the hack had not been found out until very recently.

In a letter to Yahoo CEO, Senator Al Franken wrote: “We are even more disturbed that user information was first compromised in 2014, yet the company only announced the breach last week. That means millions of Americans’ data may have been compromised for two years. This is unacceptable.”  The comes at an unfortunate time when Yahoo is attempting to sell its core business to Verizon for 4.8 billion dollars.  This hack may greatly reduce the price of Yahoo’s business and may impact the sale.

Yahoo is currently working with unnamed authorities on the matter.  This may be the worst hack so far, with users affected globally, and it will truly impact the company.
